닭볶음탕(dak bokkeumtang: chicken roast) - how to make it




Ages ago, I heard pretty funny episode. It was a part of the interview with a celebrity.

(R - reporter / C - Celebrity)



R : So, what's your favorite food? Do you have any one?


C : Hmm, my favorite food is "닭도리탕 (Dak doritang)"


R : Oh, you like "닭볶음탕(Dak bokkeumtang)!"


C : No, I like 닭도리탕(DAK DORITANG), not 닭볶음탕(Dak bokkeumtang)!

I suppose most of you don't know why it's funny story, and there is a BIG question mark in your head.
To explain, 닭도리탕(Dak doritang) and 닭볶음탕(Dak bokkeumtang) means same Korean dish. BUT 닭도리탕 isn't right expression because the word is from Japanese. 도리(dori) means "Chicken" in Japanese. So, 닭볶음탕(Dak bokkeumtang) is better expression. (People can get it if you say "닭도리탕" though.) Anyway, the key point in the episode is that the celebrity didn't know 닭볶음탕 and 닭도리탕 is same dish. -.-



If asked why I'm talking about the episode... Yeah, I'm gonig to post about the dish. 닭볶음탕!
You probably can try this easily because it's a dish with chicken. Plus, it doesn't need Kimchi to make it!









Anyway, let me start cooking.:)

Firstly, wash and prepare onion, carrot, and sweet potato.
Actually original ingredient is just potato, not sweet potato. But with sweet potato, it tastes more sweet. I prefer sweet potato so. :)
p.s: The purple one is also sweet potato.





And spring onions.





Of course, prepare chicken, the most important one! Clean the chicken, and if it's not clean, you need to blanch it for about 30 seconds.



Anyway, next step is cutting the sweet potatoes. Don't chop it finely..!




Then, boil the chicken. If you want enough liquid, put enough water into the pot. :)





Add sweet potatoes then. The reason add sweet potatoes early is that it takes time to be cooked.




Cut carrot, and onions. But DON'T add it yet.







While it's boiling, we are going to make sauce.

Firstly, add 간장(soy sauce), the brown one, ginger, and crushed garlic. The yellow square one is garlic. I just crushed it and kept it in a freezer.

Second, add 매실 액기스(asian apricot liquid). If you don't have it, you can add honey instead.

And then, add perilla oil and soju (Korean alcohol). I think you can add wine instead, I haven't yet though. It's just to remove the bad smell of chicken.



Then, add 고추장(hot pepper paste),



dried red pepper powder,




and  black pepper. (Plus, add 1ts of sugar!)



Finally MIX IT!


If the sweet potato turns yellow, add the sauce to the chicken, and then, add onions and carrot you prepared.



While it's boiling prepare two peppers, and chop it.



Add them of course.




While it's boiling, pour the liquid at the top of chicken, so make sure the chicken is seasoned well.



When it's cooked well like this,



chop the spring onions and add it.






So, it's done like this!! :D  You can enjoy it from now on.






Extra posting:  How I enjoyed it






Before eat it, I prepared vegetables like lettuce and perilla leaf. They were just for 쌈(ssam). It's one of Korean way to eat meat, eating meat wrapped in leaves of lettuce, cabbage, sesame, or other greens. :)





Yeah, I wanted to eat it as 쌈! So, prepared the sauce(쌈장: Ssamjang) as well.




So finally I prepared all! I can't wait!





On the lettuce, put a chicken, sweet potatoes, rice, 쌈장, and spring onions.



Actually, put whatever you want to eat!






wrap it, and you can eat it at a mouthful!



Yeah, I enjoyed it with Corona beer <3
