Before start this posting, I will introduce Korean children's song.
Yes, it's a song for New year's day, and today, I'm going to post about the day, 설날. Of course January 1st is also 설날, but our traditional holiday is lunar new year's day. In Korea, january 1st is called Sinjeong, and lunar new year's day is called Gujeong.
This time, it was Gujeong. Gujeong is 3day holiday. This time it's holiday from January 30th to February 1st. The red box, January 31st, is real Gujeong, and side days are just holidays for 31st. :)
So, What do Koreans do on lunar new year's day?
This day is family-oriented festival, so people go to the grandparent's house, or relatives house. For example, I go to my uncle's house on lunar new year's day.
And then,

We have a memorial service for ancestors. BUT it depends on family. Some family don't do memorial service for their ancestors.

And then, we give new year's greetings to parents or elder people.
(We usually get money after it. :P *Yay*)
Then, what do we eat? :o
Of course, we eat 떡국.
And we eat some other traditional foods like these:
This is 전.(Jeon) To the left 꼬치전(Kochi jeon: skewer pancake), in the middle line, it's 동태전(Dongtae jeon: Pollack pancake) at the top, the green things are 호박전 (Hobak jeon: courgette/zucchini pancake), and to the right, there are 동그랑땡 (Dong-grang-ttang: Korea style meatball).
And this is 잡채(Japchae), it's kind of noodle with meat and vegetables. We also eat 잡채 on our birthday.
And this is 산자(Sanja: fried glutinous rice-cake). There is A BOX of Sanja in my home. -_-;
This is sweet and little bit ginger flavored.
It's little bit small. Actually the size isn't important though.
This is also 산자. I got it from one of my relatives. It's pretty big and sweet. At least bigger, and sweater than one in my home.
Can you guess how big it is? :P
This is what my mom bought. It's 편강.(Pyun-gang:sliced dried ginger)
Yes, it's GINGER. So spicy!! :ooo
It looks pretty cute though.
Anyway, today I told you about Korean lunar new year's day. I really really hope to help you understand and know about Korean culture. :) It's still holiday in Korea, so I'm going to enjoy my foods. :P *yay!*
